Jemima Fosua Amoafo-Gaisie

Ghana

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m Jemima, known in the art world as jesuisjemimaa. I began creating art in 2020 during the COVID lockdown, using my fingers on the mobile app PicsArt as a way to cope with the grief of losing my cousin the year before. After getting my first laptop in December 2020, I taught myself photomanipulation and graphic design through YouTube. In 2023, I transitioned into illustrations. My work is inspired by Ghana and explores stories of shared Ghanaian experiences, mental health and black women.

Many things inspire my work. I’m drawn to the different facets of Ghana, our symbols, monuments, food, and shared experiences. I’m also deeply inspired by Black women: our skin, our hair, and our beauty. Mental health is another important theme in my work, and I aim to use my art to help destigmatize conversations around it.

My creative superpower has to be translating memory and emotion into simple, powerful visuals inspired by Ghana, mental health issues and Black womanhood. It can be as little as an old memory of something I used to do or see when I was a child and I put that in my work.

My biggest career wins include exhibiting my work both in Ghana and internationally, with shows in New York, London, Dallas, and Accra in 2024. Another milestone was being named the NewComma x Akuna Wallet Best Portfolio Winner in 2025. Most meaningful to me, however, is knowing my art prints live in the homes of people who genuinely connect with and love my work something I never take for granted.

I would change the culture of undervaluing creative work. Art and design shape culture and storytelling, yet creatives are often underpaid or overlooked. I believe artists deserve fair compensation, recognition, and sustainable opportunities.
